Nick "Mex" Escalante (Burt Reynolds) is an ex-mercenary in Las Vegas who hires out as a bodyguard, taking whatever chaperone jobs pay, and he is saving every dollar for a move to Venice, Italy. William Goldman adapted his own novel, and Dick Richards puts Nick in the casino world among gamblers, the mob, and a young woman named Holly (Karen Young). Nick has a number in his head and a city he has never seen, and he keeps working toward both.
