Heaven Can Wait

(1943)Directed by Ernst Lubitsch112 minComedy, Romance, Fantasy, Drama
“He believed in Love… Honor… and Obey – That Impulse!”

Henry Van Cleve (Don Ameche) dies in 1942 and walks into a waiting room at the gates of Hell, sure he has earned the place after a lifetime of spending, flirting and getting his way. His Excellency (Laird Cregar), the devil, is less certain, so Henry starts telling his story from the beginning. Ernst Lubitsch follows him through a 25-year marriage to Martha (Gene Tierney), and Cregar's host stays seated behind his desk, patient in his tailored suit, listening.
