“He's a man so shy, he doesn't even think he deserves love…”

Victor Modino (Pruitt Taylor Vince) cooks in the roadside restaurant his mother, Dolly (Shelley Winters), owns, and what he wants is to be noticed by Callie (Liv Tyler), the college dropout who has just started waiting tables. He is too shy to say a word to her and too aware of his weight to think she would answer. James Mangold, making his first feature, keeps the camera close on Victor's face in the grease-soaked kitchen.
