In 1957 England, the Hawlett Trucking yard runs on gravel hauls and the drivers are paid by how many loads they can get through in a day. Tom Yately (Stanley Baker), just out of prison, takes the job and quickly learns that Red Redman (Patrick McGoohan) sets the pace and the rest of the crew follow him. Cy Endfield gives Tom one soft spot, Lucy (Peggy Cummins), the company secretary, who sees him as more than the man in the cab.
