Anaïs Nin (Maria de Medeiros) is a young writer in 1930s Paris, married to the steady banker Hugo (Richard E. Grant), and she wants a life that feels less safe. She finds it in Henry Miller (Fred Ward), a scrappy author with a typewriter and an appetite, and in his wife June (Uma Thurman), who draws her in just as fast. Philip Kaufman builds the story on how desire gets mixed up with writing, since Anaïs puts every touch and every betrayal straight into her diary.
