A patch of ground in New Jersey stays put while everything around it changes, from open wilderness to a house where families come and go across generations. Richard (Tom Hanks) and Margaret (Robin Wright) grow up in that living room, then marry and raise children under its roof. Robert Zemeckis fixes the camera in one spot, so Richard has only the same four walls to measure what a life gives and takes.
