Annie Graham (Toni Collette), a miniature artist, grieves her mother's death when strange things start happening to her family. Her husband Steve (Gabriel Byrne) and their two children experience incidents that seem to worsen, and Annie realizes her mother left behind secrets still unfolding. Ari Aster builds the dread through ordinary family spaces, then finds her standing alone in the attic, the walls closing in, everything about her hollow.
