Tom Holmes (Richard Barthelmess) comes home from the First World War with the pain from his battle wounds, a suffering he cannot shake and that follows him through the years after. He meets Mary Dennis (Aline MacMahon) and Ruth Loring (Loretta Young), and each shows him a different kind of love and a different kind of loss. William A. Wellman keeps the camera plain and close, staying with Tom's face and his work.
