Calcutta, Direct Action Day, and Saket Ram (Kamal Haasan) comes home to find his wife raped and killed in the riots. His grief hardens into a single conviction, that Mahatma Gandhi is to blame for what the country has become, and he sets out to kill him. Haasan wrote, directed and produced the film, and its real subject is how a private wound turns a man toward public violence.
