A man is shot dead in the street in Northern Ireland, and the American lawyer who came to document abuses there, Ingrid Jessner (Frances McDormand), is left asking who wanted him silenced. Peter Kerrigan (Brian Cox), a British investigator working against his own government's wishes, joins her search for the people behind it. Ken Loach keeps the film in cramped rooms and plain talk, building the case out of procedure and testimony.
