In 1963 Yokohama, shoe executive Kingo Gondo (Toshirō Mifune) is about to stake his life savings on a buyout of the company he sits on the board of. Then a phone call tells him his son has been taken, and the boy the kidnappers actually grabbed is his chauffeur's. Akira Kurosawa sets the two fathers in the same house, one asked to pay, the other left waiting on that choice.
