Why would C. K. Dexter-Haven (Bing Crosby) turn up uninvited with a reporter and a photographer, just before the society wedding of his ex-wife? Charles Walters sets the story across 48 hours, with Cole Porter songs filling the gaps between the rehearsals and the parties. Tracy Lord (Grace Kelly) is meant to marry George Kittredge (John Lund), but she has not stopped talking to Dexter-Haven, and neither of them says why.
