Steven Kenet (Robert Taylor), a man with a recurring brain injury, confesses to strangling his wife and is committed to an understaffed county asylum. Dr. Ann Lorrison (Audrey Totter) doesn't believe his story at first, and he won't agree to treatment. Curtis Bernhardt keeps the camera close on the cramped wards and the faces of the inmates, so the place feels like it's pressing in on whoever walks through.
