Tinle (Thilen Lhondup), the aging chief of a Tibetan mountain village, wants the yearly salt caravan to leave when the old customs say it should. Before the yak herds are loaded for the trek to trade salt for grain, Karma (Gurgon Kyap), a restless younger man, challenges that authority, and the village divides behind them. Éric Valli sets the two men against each other with a grievance older than the quarrel itself.
