Irene Vail (Jean Arthur) is leaving her wealthy husband, Bruce (Colin Clive), who will not let her go and will go to some length to prove she cannot. One night in Paris she meets Paul Dumond (Charles Boyer), a waiter who treats her with a gentleness she has not known in years. Frank Borzage lets the comedy, the romance and the suspense share the same rooms, shifting between them without warning.
