Hobson's Choice

Henry Horatio Hobson (Charles Laughton), a Victorian boot shop owner and widower, wants to keep his three daughters at home and keep his money in his pocket, so he forbids any of them to marry. His eldest, Maggie (Brenda De Banzie), has other plans, and they involve William Mossop (John Mills), the timid bootmaker who works in Hobson's cellar. David Lean builds the film on the two of them, Maggie brisk and certain, Will slow to believe she means it.
