Georges Iscovescu (Charles Boyer), a Romanian-French gigolo, is stuck in a Mexican border town, kept out of the United States by the quota system. His plan is to marry an American and walk away from her, the way his old partner Anita (Paulette Goddard) already has. He picks Emmy Brown (Olivia de Havilland), a schoolteacher who takes him at his word, and Mitchell Leisen lets the scheme and the sincerity run side by side.
