“It's going to be a shot in the dark!”

Val Waxman (Woody Allen) won two Oscars once, and now he is a neurotic, washed-up director who can't get hired. A studio finally offers him a picture, but the job comes through his ex-wife Ellie (Téa Leoni), who left him for a studio head, and he has to work for her or lose his last chance. Allen plays the two of them as old partners still circling each other, still half in love, and neither will say it.
