Charlotte Bronn (Jean Simmons) steps off the train and goes back to her husband Arnold (Dan O'Herlihy) and the house she left when she was institutionalized in a mental hospital. Mervyn LeRoy follows her through the first days at home, where Arnold, her stepmother Inez (Mabel Albertson) and the people around her watch her carefully. Whether Charlotte can stay well enough to keep this life, and the marriage under it, is what hangs over every room.
