A blonde woman named Emily (Joan Marshall) checks into a hotel and offers the bellboy $2000 to marry her for a single night. Nobody in the film can say who she is, though she looks after Helga Swenson (Eugenie Leontovich), a wheelchair-bound mute, in a house where a half-brother is about to inherit his late father's estate. William Castle films it in a small California town, plain and tidy on the surface, and builds the suspense from long waits on a closed door.
