In 1980, Buck (Willie Nelson) spends his life on the country circuit, playing one town after another with his band while his wife Viv (Dyan Cannon) waits at home. Jerry Schatzberg follows the tour as Lily (Amy Irving), the daughter of his longtime sidekick Garland (Slim Pickens), joins the road crew. Buck loves his wife and his music, and Lily's arrival leaves him caught between the life he has and the one he keeps driving toward.
