Ticlaw is a small Florida town with one attraction, a safari park, and a new freeway running right past it with no exit built in. The Mayor and the townspeople will try nearly anything to get the governor to change his plans, while travelers like Duane Hansen (Beau Bridges) and Carmen Odessa Shelby (Beverly D'Angelo) head down the same road. John Schlesinger spreads the story across a crowd of drivers, locals and strangers, cutting between them.
