How I Won the War

(1967)Directed by Richard Lester109 minComedy, War
“"There's been some marvelous advances in surgery, thanks to war!"”

The title promises a victory, but the man telling it is Lieutenant Ernest Goodbody (Michael Crawford), an officer so hopeless that his own platoon tags along behind him across North Africa and Europe. Richard Lester stages the campaign as deadpan sketches, with Gripweed (John Lennon), Clapper (Roy Kinnear) and Transom (Lee Montague) marching through each one. The men follow Goodbody anyway, and what holds them together is a loyalty none of them can account for.
