In 1594, a Frenchman is dragged ashore on the Brazilian coast and taken prisoner by the Tupinambás. Nelson Pereira dos Santos follows him through the long wait before his execution, as Seboipepe (Ana Maria Magalhães) shows him how the village lives and tries to help him escape. Francês (Arduíno Colassanti) learns their ways and takes up their customs, hoping that will keep him alive.
