Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield) lives in the walls of a Paris train station in the 1930s, oiling its clocks and guarding the broken automaton his late father left him. He wants to make the machine work, and the only help he finds comes from Isabelle (Chloë Grace Moretz), the goddaughter of a bitter toy merchant, Georges Méliès (Ben Kingsley). Martin Scorsese turns the search into a story about how old pictures get lost and why someone has to go looking for them.
