Paul Boray (John Garfield), a violinist from a working-class family, plays his way into the orbit of Helen Wright (Joan Crawford), a wealthy and restless socialite who becomes his patroness. Jean Negulesco follows the two as her money and attention open concert halls for him, while his father Rudy (J. Carrol Naish) watches from the edges. Paul has to choose between the music he has trained for since boyhood and the woman who wants all of him.
