Debby Miller (Uma Thurman) is a restless young woman in 1980s New Jersey, unhappy and single, living in the same house as her mother Virginia (Gena Rowlands). She and her friend Beth (Juliette Lewis) spend their nights searching for Mr. Right and complaining about how it keeps going. Mira Nair adapts Laura Cahill's stage play and keeps the story close to its characters, with the camera staying on faces and rooms.
