A doctor says Daniel Blake (Dave Johns), a 59-year-old carpenter, is too sick to work after his heart attack, yet the benefits office says he is not sick enough. While he argues his case, he befriends Katie (Hayley Squires), a single mother with two kids, Daisy and Dylan, and they begin to lean on each other. Ken Loach and writer Paul Laverty ask what a person is owed when the system built to help them keeps turning them away.
