In 1945, Joan Webster (Wendy Hiller) travels from England to the Hebrides to marry a wealthy industrialist, a trip she has planned down to the day. Weather strands her on the Isle of Mull, where the islanders, and a naval officer named Torquil MacNeil (Roger Livesey), are in no hurry to help her cross. Powell and Pressburger leave her with every plan she made and a growing pull toward a man she can't leave behind.
