I Travel Because I Have to, I Come Back Because I Love You

We never see the faces of the people José Renato (Irandhir Santos) talks to on this trip, only hear his voice as he drives alone through the dry interior of northeastern Brazil. He is a 35-year-old geologist sent to survey routes for a canal meant to bring water from the region's only major river. Marcelo Gomes and Karim Aïnouz follow him from stop to stop, and the longer he works, the more he looks like the empty places he is measuring.
