In 1941 New York, the young actress Vicky Lynn (Carole Landis) is dead, and the promoter who found her waiting tables is the one the police want. Frankie Christopher (Victor Mature) is questioned by Inspector Ed Cornell (Laird Cregar) and sets out to clear his name, helped by Vicky's sister Jill (Betty Grable). H. Bruce Humberstone builds the film around how little proof it takes to ruin a man's name.
