Four girls from New Jersey have no tickets and no plan, only the certainty that missing the Beatles' first live appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964, will ruin their lives. Robert Zemeckis follows Pam (Nancy Allen) and her friends into New York for a single day, with Tony (Bobby Di Cicco) caught up in the same crowd. Pam and Tony keep running into each other, two teenagers after the same unreachable thing, and no one else is quite so close.
