Andrzej Leszczyc (Jerzy Skolimowski) is a Polish student who has been drafted and has one day left before he reports for military service. Skolimowski, making his first feature, follows him as he sorts out things with his estranged wife (Elżbieta Czyżewska) and looks in on old friends, none of it hurried. Andrzej drifts from one place to the next, trying to hold on to the last of his freedom while it runs out.
