“A big story of a little man which will grip your soul...”
For decades Kanji Watanabe (Takashi Shimura) has stamped papers at a Tokyo city office, and then a doctor gives him a diagnosis that leaves him unable to go on as before. Akira Kurosawa follows him through the first confused weeks, as he starts hunting for a reason his life should have mattered. The person he reaches for hardest is his son Mitsuo (Nobuo Kaneko), a man living in the same house who has stopped listening.
