Patrick Leigh Fermor (Dirk Bogarde) is a British officer in occupied Crete who goes by the name Philedem among the partisans he works beside. With Captain Bill Moss (David Oxley), he plans to seize the island's German commander, General Kreipe (Marius Goring), and smuggle him to Cairo. Powell and Pressburger tell it as a shared effort, where the plan depends on every islander who hides, guides and carries.
