Franciszek Retman (Stanisław Latałło) enters university as a physics student certain that science can explain everything worth explaining. Krzysztof Zanussi follows him across ten years, through lectures, affairs with Agnieszka (Monika Dzienisiewicz-Olbrychska) and Małgorzata (Małgorzata Pritulak), and a tragedy that his equations have no answer for. Franciszek keeps working, but the certainty he arrived with has begun to cost him.
