Jiale (Koh Jia Ler) is a young boy in Singapore who fights with his teachers, his classmates and his parents, and no one in the household can say why. Then the family hires Teresa (Angeli Bayani), a Filipino nanny, just as the 1997 Asian financial crisis begins, and Anthony Chen builds his debut around the small apartment she enters. Under the money worries, the film is about who gets to be called family, and who only gets paid to act like it.
