In 1959 Britain, a decent, well-spoken young man named Stanley Windrush (Ian Carmichael) goes looking for a career in the family business and ends up at a munitions factory, starting at the bottom. Management, led by Major Hitchcock (Terry-Thomas), and the union, with Fred Kite (Peter Sellers) at its head, both find him useful in their fight for power. John Boulting directs it as a comedy of small-minded men in rooms, each one sure the other side is the problem.
