Cathryn (Susannah York), a children's author, travels to a remote vacation home in Ireland with her husband Hugh (René Auberjonois), and soon sees men who should not be there. Her own double turns up too, and Cathryn can no longer tell which of them is real. Robert Altman keeps her in the house with its dark windows, a pregnant woman looking at her own reflection.
