Why does a woman who publishes novels under a man's name, wears trousers, and answers to no one set her sights on a shy young pianist? In 1830s France, George Sand (Judy Davis) decides she wants Frédéric Chopin (Hugh Grant) and sets about winning him among the composers, painters and poets of her circle. James Lapine films it at the Château des Briottières, and what grows between the two is slow and awkward, all her insistence set against his reserve.
