“The Bogart suspense picture with the surprise finish!”

A young woman is found murdered, and Hollywood screenwriter Dixon Steele (Humphrey Bogart), known for a violent temper, becomes the police's suspect. His neighbor Laurel Gray (Gloria Grahame) clears him with her word, and they fall in love. Nicholas Ray holds on the two of them across a table, Bogart's eyes fixed on her and Grahame's gaze drifting just off to the side.
