In a Year with 13 Moons

Elvira Weishaupt (Volker Spengler) has had surgery to become a woman for the sake of a man who then walked away, and now she tries to hold together the butcher she used to be and the person she is today. Her days run through old acquaintances, among them Zora la rouge (Ingrid Caven), each tied to a different part of her past. Fassbinder, who also wrote and produced the film, holds the camera on Elvira's face and lets the silences run long.
