Perry Smith (Robert Blake) and Dick Hickcock (Scott Wilson) are two drifters who want one big score, a robbery of a farmhouse in Holcomb, Kansas that Hickcock is sure will pay. It ends with a family of four dead. Richard Brooks, adapting Truman Capote's book, follows the two on the road while Alvin Dewey (John Forsythe) works the case, and the camera stays on Smith's face.
