Captain Rockwell Torrey (John Wayne) is a Navy officer reprimanded after Pearl Harbor, and he wants one more chance to prove himself against the Japanese. Otto Preminger fills the Pacific command with officers and wives, among them Commander Paul Eddington, Jr. (Kirk Douglas) and the nurse Maggie Hayes (Patricia Neal). Torrey and Maggie meet in the middle of the war, two people no longer young, trying to find a footing with each other.
