“Based on the incredible true story that inspired Moby Dick”

Owen Chase (Chris Hemsworth), a first mate aboard the New England whaling ship Essex in 1820, wants the captaincy he has been promised and keeps being denied. Instead he sails under George Pollard (Benjamin Walker), who has the family name and little else, and the two men are still sizing each other up when the ship meets a whale of mammoth size and will. Ron Howard stages the hunt close and loud, with the crew hauled through spray and splintering wood.
