In Rio de Janeiro, Mercedes (Lília Cabral), a woman in her forties, sits down with a psychoanalyst and begins telling the story of her life, starting with the girl who lost her mother. José Alvarenga Jr. follows her through three years of sessions, as her marriage to Gustavo (José Mayer) ends and a younger man, Theo (Reynaldo Gianecchini), enters her life. Gustavo is still there in everything she remembers, and the two of them keep circling each other.
