Suzu Hojo (Non) is a young woman from a village near Hiroshima who wants nothing more than to be useful to the people she lives with. In 1943 she marries and moves to her in-laws' home in Kure, a military harbor, where she stretches scarce food and turns small daily chores into little acts of beauty. Sunao Katabuchi follows her as the air raids come more often, and Suzu keeps her cheer even while the people around her are lost.
