“This Longing ... This Yearning ... This Wanting ...”

In 1953, the Roma Termini railway station is where Mary Forbes (Jennifer Jones), a married American on vacation, is meant to catch a train to Paris and go home to her husband and daughter in Philadelphia. Giovanni Doria (Montgomery Clift), the Italian man she has been seeing, has come to the platform to ask her not to leave. Vittorio De Sica keeps them inside the station, where each hour on the clock sets the cost of staying against the cost of going.
