“A great film from a mysterious world”

In French Indochina in the 1930s, Éliane Devries (Catherine Deneuve) runs a rubber plantation and raises Camille (Linh-Dan Pham), the Vietnamese girl she adopted. Régis Wargnier sets their ordered life against the first stirrings of a nationalist movement, and a young naval officer, Jean-Baptiste (Vincent Perez), draws both women toward him. The love stays tied to the country, and the two of them cannot love without taking a side in who owns it.
