Ingeborg Holm

(1913)Directed by Victor Sjöström108 minDrama

Why does a woman who ran her own grocery shop in Sweden end up behind the workhouse door? Ingeborg Holm (Hilda Borgström) loses her husband to illness, then the store, and then her children, who are sent to separate foster homes while she is taken in by the poorhouse. Victor Sjöström, who also plays no part in the cast, keeps her in the workhouse, a dark figure among the staff, pressing herself toward the one door she is not allowed to open.
